Cleveland Police Shoot, Wound Accused Car Thief

Police said the man is suspected of stealing a car and leading police on a chase.

CLEVELAND — Police shot and wounded a man that is suspected of stealing a car and then firing a handgun at pursuing police on Sunday morning.

Cleveland police said they responded to an aggravated robbery of a motor vehicle call at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday on E. 83rd Street.

The stolen vehicle had sustained significant damage, according to police. While the suspect was driving the stolen vehicle, it caught fire. The suspect bailed out of the car and then began firing at pursuing officers, according to Cleveland police.

Police returned fire and hit the suspect multiple times. The suspect was rushed to University Hospitals for treatment and was in surgery on Sunday night. The suspect is a 40-year-old man, police said.

No officers were injured in the exchange.

The Cuyahoga County Sherrif's Office is investigating the incident. The officers involved will be placed on administrative leave, with pay, for at least three days, police said.
