Dave Chappelle Addresses Ohio City Council
The superstar comedian spoke to the Yellow Springs Village Council, in his hometown, and urged a shift toward more progressive policing.

YELLOW SPRINGS, OH — Comedian Dave Chappelle spent his summers in the small Dayton suburb of Yellow Springs. Now the former star of "Chappelle's Show" raises his own family there. He also took time out of filming a pair of new Netflix comedy specials to address Yellow Springs Village Council on the need for more progressive policing and emphasize the importance of local politics.
The tiny town of Yellow Springs drew national headlines after a New Year's Eve celebration went haywire and police officers tasered two attendees. The New York Times reported on the incident, and amid a flurry of criticism the town's police chief resigned.
Chappelle repeatedly described the New Year's Eve incident as a "gaffe" during his testimony in front of council. He also said the police force had been extremely sensitive to his particular and extraordinary situation and had prevented harm from coming to him on at least two separate occasions.

However, he also said the police force in Yellow Springs has grown increasingly alien to residents. He remembered, with nostalgia, an era when people in the town knew each and every one of the local police officers personally. He recalled knowing the wife of one officer because she was the town's music teacher. He pleaded with council to find a new police chief that better represents the unique qualities of Yellow Springs.
"What is this pool of law enforcement that you can pull a chief out of that is special enough to police this town?" Chappelle asked.

He concluded his statement by trumpeting the importance of regional politics and the ways hamlets, villages and cities across America can broadcast their individual values.
"In this Trump era, this is an opportunity to show everybody that local politics reigns supreme. We can make our corner of the world outstanding," he added.
