Coroner ID's Man Killed By Deputy On I-90 [Video]

Police were responding to a car accident when a 33-year-old man allegedly got aggressive and lunged at a Cuyahoga County Sheriffs deputy.

CLEVELAND, OH — A 33-year-old man was shot and killed by a Cuyahoga County Sheriffs deputy on Thursday night. The man was acting aggressively and allegedly ignored the deputy's orders before being shot.

The Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office has identified the 33-year-old as Brett Luengo, a Westlake businessman. He was the CEO and vice president of ConstructAbility, a company he founded with his father, according to cleveland.com. He was involved with several community groups, including the Cleveland Orchestra.

The Coroner's Office has since confirmed that Luengo was killed by a bullet wound to the chest.

A car accident on I-90 East, between W. 117th and W. Boulevard, brought Cleveland Police and the Cuyahoga County Sheriffs to the scene. At least two people involved in the accident were fighting, according to the Cuyahoga County Sheriff Clifford Pinkney.

When the deputy arrived on the scene, Luengo allegedly began acting aggressively. The deputy gave the 33-year-old several commands, which were ignored, and then used his taser. The taser had "little to no effect" Pinkney said.

The deputy then shot Luengo once. Additional police then arrived on the scene and secured the area. The 33-year-old was then rushed to MetroHealth hospital, where he died.

Armond Budish, the Cuyahoga County executive, commended the deputy for his actions while also offering his condolences to the family of Brett Luengo. "This is a very difficult day for all of us, but I am grateful to our deputy who responded and helped citizens who themselves were in danger," Budish said. "Our safety officers do not come into service to take lives, but to save them. I know our deputy responded appropriately."

The officer involved in the shooting was unharmed and has been placed on mandatory leave following the shooting, Pinkney said at a press conference Friday afternoon.

Witnesses told Fox 8 that the 33-year-old had been attacking anyone that stopped to check on him after the accident. He continued to act aggressively towards police, prior to the shooting.

The Cleveland Division of Police's Use of Deadly Force Investigative Team went to the scene to investigate. Police continue to look into what happened, according to a Cleveland Police spokesperson.
