Drunk Driving Checkpoint In Lakewood Friday Night

The Ohio State Highway Patrol will be stationed on W. 117th Street looking for intoxicated drivers.

LAKEWOOD, OH — Party goers and bar hoppers in Lakewood could be in for a rude sobering up on Friday night. The Ohio State Highway Patrol announced it would stage a drunk driving checkpoint on W. 117th this evening.

"If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before you drink. Don't let another life be lost for the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired," the Ohio State Highway Patrol said in a release.

There are plenty of ride-sharing services that patrol Lakewood on weekends, eager to offer rides to the inebriated. There's no reason to get behind the wheel of a car drunk.

The Patrol said its checkpoint is funded by federal grants and will be held in conjunction with nearby "saturation" patrols, which will aggressively seek out intoxicated drivers. The goal is to deter and intercept impaired drivers.

There have been 928 driving deaths in Ohio this year, the Patrol said.
