Former Indians Infielder Luis Valbuena Killed In Car Crash

Valbuena was in a car with Jose Castillo, another former MLB player, when their car crashed. Both men were killed.

Former Cleveland Indians infielder Luis Valbuena, and former MLB player José Castillo, were killed in a car crash in Venezuela this week. Both men were playing in Venezuela's winter league.

"We are living a horrible tragedy in Cardenales de Lara. We lost our players Luis Valbuena and José Castillo in a traffic accident," Valbuena's and Castillo's team tweeted.

Both men were traveling to a Cardenales de Lara game when they hit a rock and careened off the road. The Venezuelan League's official website said Valbuena and Castillo were thrown from the vehicle.

Valbuena came to the Indians in 2009 and spent three years with the team. A career journeyman, he spent the past two seasons with the Los Angeles Angels. He was 33.

"We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Angel Luis Valbuena and former MLB infielder José Castillo. Our thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones during this time of grief," the Angles said on Twitter.

Major League Baseball confirmed the news on Twitter, saying it was saddened to learn of the deaths.
