Former Ohio Corrections Officer Accused Of Bribery

Prosecutors said the corrections officer accepted payment for smuggling tobacco and cell phones into a corrections facility.

YOUNGSTOWN, OH — A former corrections officer has been accused of providing cell phones and tobacco to inmates at the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center, the Department of Justice announced.

Skyler Herring 27, from Youngstown, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Cleveland on Monday. He is accused of bribery, prosecutors said.

Between November 2018 and August 2019, the indictment said, Herring accepted electronic payments from inmates in return for smuggling three cell phones and tobacco into the correctional center.

Herring was investigated by the Cleveland division of the FBI.

The Northeast Ohio Correctional Center is located in Youngstown and holds federal detainees pre-trial. The United States Marshal Service is responsible for the upkeep of the facility.
