Former Slugger Albert Belle Arrested For DUI, Indecent Exposure

The Cleveland Indians legend was arrested during a spring training game in Arizona.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — Former Cleveland Indians' slugger Albert Belle, now 51, was reportedly arrested for DUI and indecent exposure during a spring training game on Sunday. The leftfielder was part of some iconic Tribe teams during his stint in Cleveland, which started in 1989 and ended in 1996. He also had a public battle with alcohol during the 90s.

Matt Rodewald of Fox 10 Phoenix first Tweeted out the details of Belle's arrest, including a mugshot. He has been officially charged with two counts of indecent exposure, one count of DUI and one count of extreme DUI. An "extreme DUI" means simply that Belle's blood-alcohol level was measured above .08.

This is not the first time Belle has struggled with alcohol. Heading into the prime of his career, in 1990, the then-Indian spent 10-weeks being treated for alcoholism at a rehab center, according to UPI. He said his battle with alcohol led to temper tantrums during a press conference.

Despite his publicized struggle with alcohol, Belle became one of the most memorable characters on the dominant 1990s Cleveland Indians. He was a five-time All-Star and even got some MVP votes during 1992 campaign. In 1995, he hit 50 homeruns. He retired at age 34 in 2001 after suffering from hip problems.

Belle's most famous misadventure came in 1994. Oddly enough, Belle was not the provacateur, merely a main character in the drama.

Belle had been using a corked bat for part of the season. Before a game in Chicago, umpires took his bat for testing. Belle's teammates knew their slugger was in trouble.

That prompted Indians relief pitcher, Jason Grimsley, to crawl through an air duct to retrieve the corked bat. After an insane journey through the ceiling, the pitcher replaced Belle's illegal bat with a clean one. The Tribe went on to win their game in Chicago.
