Gas Prices Spike Ahead Of Memorial Day

Ohioans are paying 10 cents more at the pump than they were a week ago. Experts believe anticipation of holiday travel is behind the spike.

CLEVELAND, OH — Gas prices are spiking ahead of Memorial Day weekend. Ohioans are paying 10 cents more at the pump than they were just a week ago, the largest increase in the nation. Despite the price jump, Ohioans are still paying less at the pump than the national average, according to travel organization AAA.

Gas prices in the Buckeye State jumped from $2.24 for a gallon of regular to $2.34 in one week. The 10 cent spike is the largest increase of the week in any state.

Nationally, a gallon of regular is running about $2.36 at the pump. That's up 2 cents from last week, but still down versus last month.

The reason for the increase in gas prices is simple: anticipation of demand. The holiday weekend will undoubtedly see more people hit the highways and byways and the price to refuel a vehicle is seeing a corresponding increase.

The Great Lakes Region is still sitting on large gas reserves, suggesting prices could hold steady for a few more weeks, at least.
