Heat Advisory In Effect In Northern Ohio

Much of northern Ohio is under a heat advisory on Thursday. Avoid prolonged exposure to the heat, when possible.

CLEVELAND — A heat advisory has been issued for much of northern Ohio on Thursday.

The advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday. Temperatures could top out at 95 degrees, but with humidity and other factors it will actually feel like 104 degrees for much of the day, the National Weather Service warned.

Anyone prone to heat illness should take precautions on Thursday. Ohioans should check on neighbors and loved ones who may be susceptible to heat sickness.

"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances," the National Weather Service said.

Ohioans should also reschedule any outdoor, strenuous activities they had planned. If the activity must be done on Thursday, do it in the morning or in the evening, after the heat advisory has ended.

Here are other tips for dealing with the heat from the National Weather Service:

  • Wear lightweight, loose fitting clothes
  • If you're doing outdoor work, take frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning
  • Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool, shaded location
  • Heat stroke is an emergency! If someone is overcome by the heat, call 911

There's a 20-percent chance of thunderstorms overnight on Thursday, but temperatures could be blistering hot again on Friday. However, thunderstorms are more likely to hit at the end of the week, breaking the heat's grip on the region.
