Heavy Snow Inbound: Winter Storm Watch Issued For Northeast Ohio

Between 10 and 18 inches of snow could fall in the snow band over the next 72 hours.

Between 10 and 18 inches of snow could fall in parts of Northeast Ohio between Monday night and Wednesday, the National Weather Service said. A winter storm watch has been issued for Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties.

"The accumulating snow is expected to begin this evening and continue through the night tonight," the NWS said. The agency added the snow could begin falling in force Monday night, fall lightly on Tuesday morning, and then fall hard again on Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.

The snow could fall in bunches, hitting snow band areas over a couple of hours before dropping only light flakes. The National Weather Service said the lake effect will mean the depth of snow falling will vary widely between areas.

Conditions could be especially bad on Monday evening and Tuesday morning. Winds are expected to hit 35 to 60 mph throughout the day, which will make commutes especially hazardous. Drivers will want to build in as much extra time as they can for their rides to work and back home.

Northeast Ohioans may also want to secure their holiday decorations if they've already put them up. "Unsecured outdoor items may be blown around like Christmas decorations, patio furniture, and trash cans," the National Weather Service said.

The strong winds aren't expected to subside until midday Tuesday.

Patch will keep an eye out for power outages and school closings heading into Tuesday morning.
