hhgregg Closing 4 Ohio Stores, 88 Stores Nationwide

AKRON, OH - Four Ohio hhgregg stores will be closed as part of a chainwide consolidation that will see 88 locations close their doors permanently. The stores in Fairlawn, Mansfield, Newark, and Springdale will be shut down this Spring.

The Indianapolis-based consumer electronics chain said Thursday that the locations being closed are in unprofitable markets. Beyond the 88 store closings, the chain is also eliminating three distribution centers. That means approximately 1,500 hhgregg positions will be eliminated because of the closings.

Inventory at the affected locations will be sold off in the coming weeks, and the closings should be finished by mid-April, the retailer said. Robert J. Riesbeck, hhgregg's president and CEO, said in a release that the stores being closed are either individually underperforming or in markets that are no longer attractive to the company.

"We have determined that the economics of the affected locations will not allow us to achieve our overall goal of becoming a profitable company again … ," he stated in the release. "[W]e have identified a number of underperforming stores, as well as store locations that are no longer strong shopping destinations due to changes in the local retail shopping landscape."

The four Ohio locations closing their doors are at:

• 160 Rothrock Loop, Akron/Fairlawn
• 909 N Lexington-Springmill Rd, Mansfield
• Tri County Commons, 650 Kemper Commons Cir, Springdale

"This is a proactive decision to streamline our store footprint in the markets where we have been, and will continue to be, important to our customers, vendor partners and communities," Riesbeck stated. "We feel strongly that the markets we will remain in are the right ones for our customers and our business model."
