Huge Sinkhole Swallows Cleveland City Vehicle: Live Video

Breaking: A Cleveland Water Department fell into a sinkhole on the city's east side Thursday.

CLEVELAND, OH — A huge sinkhole swallowed a Cleveland Water Department van around 4:30 p.m. Thursday on Cleveland's east side, the city said. The van rested on its nose in the hole, estimated to be 6 to 10 feet deep, according to media reports.

No one was injured, and the driver had stepped out before the pavement began to sink. The sinkhole occurred on East 127th Street between Locke Avenue and Cornado Avenue.

It’s unclear what caused the road collapse, but WKYC-TV said the water department employee exited his van and was searching in the street for a leak when he felt the pavement beneath him begin to collapse.

It could be Friday before water service is restored to the area, the street is currently closed to traffic
