Inmate Attacked, Killed At Cuyahoga County Jail

Police believe a 48-year-old inmate at Cuyahoga County Jail was attacked and killed on Monday evening.

CLEVELAND — An inmate at Cuyahoga County Jail was killed on Monday night, Cleveland police announced.

The 48-year-old inmate died after being hit in the head, according to police. Investigators believe the man was attacked by his cellmate.

Members of the Cleveland police homicide unit were called to the jail at 6 p.m. to explore what happened.

Investigators believe corrections officers became aware of the attack after inmates started shouting for help. A corrections officer found the hurt inmate and called for her supervisor, who immediately requested medical help for the 48-year-old.

EMS arrived and took the inmate to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

No weapons were found in the jail. Police are still investigating the death, but the cause of death was listed as "blunt force trauma to the head."

The suspect is still in custody, police said.
