A Shopping Spree for Kids in Need
In the state of Ohio and across the country, poverty is a serious problem not only for adults but for many children as well. As of 2016, the child poverty rate in Ohio was 20 percent, leaving many Ohio families struggling to afford new clothes for their kids or replace worn items. In response to this devastating problem, the team at Kisling, Nestico & Redick decided to take action.
In May, they made the dreams of 12 disadvantaged Columbus children come true when they took them on a shopping spree at a local Meijer store. The kids, who were part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program, were personally escorted by a team of Kisling, Nestico & Redick employees, who footed a $3,000 bill for new shoes, shirts, dresses, and other clothing. While child poverty is a big issue that cannot be solved single handedly, Kisling, Nestico & Redick made an enormous difference in the lives of these children and their families.
Preventing Bicycle Injuries One Helmet at a Time
In June, the law firm made a goal to reduce personal injuries among children in Toledo. The team did this by providing over 300 bicycle helmets to kids participating in a local YMCA summer camp.
Kisling, Nestico & Redick chose bike safety as its focus because the team witnesses the life-changing effects of accidents every day in their work as lawyers. National statistics show that fewer than 20 percent of kids wear bicycle helmets, even though that is the best way to prevent deaths in bicycle accidents. By buying helmets for local kids, the firm not only brought awareness to an important issue but also helped make kids’ lives safer by encouraging them to use helmets.
Providing Yearly Scholarships to Area Youth
Distracted driving, including texting while driving, is a major issue in Ohio communities, especially among teenagers. Texting while driving causes over 1.6 million accidents per year, as well as 400,000 injuries, making it a serious cause of concern across the country. In Ohio alone, in 2015, over 13,000 Ohio drivers were involved in crashes due to distracted driving, which resulted in 43 deaths and nearly 7,000 injuries. An even more sobering statistic is that 41 percent of fatal crashes were caused by cell phone technology.
As a personal injury firm, Kisling, Nestico & Redick was well aware of the serious repercussions of distracted driving, and the team made it their mission to step up and raise awareness. They did so by launching their $5,000 Stop Distracted Driving Scholarship. To apply for the scholarship, high school students were asked to create proposals to reduce distracted driving among their friends. 2019’s winner was Elianna Norin, whose public service announcement video compared texting while driving to driving while blindfolded. The scholarship earnings will support her education at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Supporting Charities in the Polar Bear Jump
There isn’t a lot that the team at Kisling, Nestico & Redick isn’t willing to do to support local Ohio charities. In February, a crew from the firm hit Portage Lakes State Park, where they plunged into freezing water in support of the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank. Nearly one in five children in the Akron area face hunger, so the food bank is an essential local resource for residents. In 2018, Kisling, Nestico & Redick raised $27,000, and in 2019, it raised $30,000. Since the food bank can make four meals for just one dollar, the firm provided hundreds of thousands of meals for area children. In total, the event raised $127,071 for the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank, allowing it to serve nearly 500,000 meals to people facing hunger.
Supporting Ohio Literacy
September is National Literacy Month, and as one of Ohio’s biggest educational supporters, it’s no surprise that Kisling, Nestico & Redick was a key part of the Ohio efforts to support literacy. For several months, the firm hosted book drives at five of its locations across the state, receiving nearly 2,400 book donations. But the firm didn’t stop there: it matched the donations that it received, which resulted in a donation of nearly 4,800 books in total. These books went to hospitals across the state, including a 2,500-book donation to the Akron Children’s Hospital. The hospital was thrilled about the donation, saying how important reading is in helping ill children normalize their experiences. The rest of the books found homes in hospitals in Toledo, Columbus, Youngstown, and Cleveland.
200 Back-to-School Backpacks for Kids
While backpacks are an often overlooked necessity for kids, they are essential for carrying important school supplies to and from school. In September, just in time for the back-to-school season, Kisling, Nestico & Redick helped prepare Ohio children by donating 200 backpacks filled with an array of school supplies. The bags were stuffed with pencils, folders, notebooks, and more. The result was many happy kids whose families might not have been able to afford these key school supplies without the firm’s help.
Coats and Cans for Kids
An important 2019 charity event that shouldn’t be left off the list is the KNR Coats & Cans for Kids Turkey Giveaway. During the event, which took place in the Akron area, Kisling, Nestico & Redick gave away turkeys in exchange for donations of either coats or canned goods. All in all, the firm gave away 1,000 turkeys and collected 7,552 lbs of canned goods and 408 coats for charity. Food donations went to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. Coat donations went to the Providence House and the May Dugan Center, both in Cleveland.

$2,500 Donation to Akron Mother
Meredith Wagler is a mother of two daughters who recently moved to the Akron, Ohio with her family. Meredith and her family have been through a whirlwind this year, as Meredith was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer a few months ago.
To make matters worse on Black Friday, Meredith and her family came home to find out they had been robbed. “I walked upstairs to my room and I noticed my closet was open, my laptop was gone all my Christmas gifts I had hidden in there were gone, all my jewelry was gone,” Wagler told WKYC Studios.
When the attorneys at Kisling, Nestico & Redick they sprung in action and wanted to help with the recovery process. The personal injury law firm donated $2,500 to help the family begin their journey back to normalcy.
