Here are the top stories in Cleveland today:
- Yesterday, a Cuyahoga County grand jury returned a four-count indictment charging Robert Shepard, 29, with aggravated murder, murder, and two counts of felonious assault in the September killing of Frank Q. Jackson, grandson of Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson. Shepard has been accused of luring Jackson to the location where he was fatally shot.Investigators still have not identified the actual shooter. - Cleveland City Council is set to vote on its next council president this morning in a special caucus. President-hopeful Blaine Griffin has long been rumored as outgoing Council President Kevin Kelley's likely successor. Griffin has told reporters he believes he will get the nine Council votes needed to become President. (cleveland.com)
- Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams has announced his resignation effective Jan. 3, 2022. Mayor-elect Justin Bibb had vowed to fire Williams if elected, but Williams is now resigning before Bibb takes office. (Cleveland Patch)
- Ohio high school students will be required to learn financial literacy skills under a new law. Governor Mike DeWine signed Senate Bill 1 into law last week, which will mandate students across the state to receive 60 total hours of instruction from a teacher who has been properly trained in financial literacy. - For the first time in its nearly 140-year history, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is celebrating the birth of a baby boy gorilla, born Oct. 26. A news release from the zoo says the public will soon have an opportunity to share their suggestions for the gorilla's name. (Cleveland 19 News)
