More Ohio Companies Announce Layoffs This Week

Unemployment continues to rise in Ohio and nationally, even as state economies begin to reopen.

NORTHFIELD, OH — Over the past week, 61,083 Ohioans have filed for unemployment, according to the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services (ODJFS). More than 1 million Ohioans have filed for unemployment since the onset of the new coronavirus outbreak.

Ohio's economy is in the midst of a phased reopening. General offices, construction and distribution facilities reopened this week. Consumer retail will open Monday and restaurants can begin offering outdoor service on May 15. Gov. Mike DeWine estimated 92 percent of the private economy will have reopened in Ohio by May 15.

Even as the state continues its steady march toward full reopening, Ohio's 1.1 million unemployed remain largely unpaid. The ODJFS said 536,000 Ohioans have received unemployment filings, less than half of the state's total unemployed.
