Mother's Day Carjacking Gets Cleveland Man 10 Years In Prison

A 67-year-old grandmother coming home from church had her car stolen at gunpoint on Mother's Day in 2017.

CLEVELAND, OH — A 21-year-old Cleveland man has been sentenced to more than a decade in prison for carjacking a grandmother on Mother's Day. Shairon Motley-Lipscomb will serve 10 years and four months in federal prison after pleading guilty to the crime.

On May 14, 2017, Motley-Lipscomb confronted a 67-year-old woman while she was standing in her driveway and talking to her daughter on her cell phone. The woman had just gotten home from church when the 21-year-old pulled out a gun and stole her 2008 Buick Enclave, court documents said.

“A grandmother on her way home from church on Mother’s Day was talking to her daughter on the telephone,” U.S. Attorney Justin E. Herdman said. “That is when this defendant pointed a gun at her and stole her car. We remain committed to getting defendants like this off our streets and making our communities safer.”

The grandmother dropped her cell phone in the car during the carjacking. The woman's daughter heard the 21-year-old say, "Yeah, I got the car. Meet me at Mom’s,” according to court documents.

“There is no place for an individual like this in our community,” stated Trevor Velinor, ATF’s Special Agent in Charge for the Columbus Field Division. “A person who is so willing to violate our laws and societal norms, against a mother on Mothers’ Day no less, needs to be removed from our community so he can do no further harm.”
