Nancy Pelosi Retains House Democratic Leadership Position, Defeats Challenge from Ohioan Tim Ryan
Pelosi won 134-63 in a closed vote.

WASHINGTON D.C. - Nancy Pelosi will lead House Democrats for another term after defeating a challenge from Ohioan Tim Ryan on Wednesday. Multiple news outlets are reporting that Pelosi won 134-63 in a closed vote.
Pelosi has served as leader of House Democrats for 12 years. This will be her eighth term as leader of the Democrats in the House. Ryan was the first threat to her leadership position in several election cycles.
From the beginning, many within the party felt Ryan posed little threat to Pelosi. Some even characterized his bid as a publicity stunt. However, Ryan seemed deadly serious about his push for change. He allegedly spent much of the Thanksgiving recess making phone calls to fellow Democrats, attempting to gain their support for Wednesday's vote. He even told CNN on Tuesday that many people would be surprised by the outcome of the vote. Instead, Pelosi has squashed her challenger.

Some Democrats felt the party's crushing defeat on Nov. 8 set the stage for a shakeup. Pelosi became, in some ways, the face of old party politics and failure. Some news outlets reported that younger members of the party felt Pelosi represented an antiquated mindset. Ryan likely felt that there was an opportunity to push out Pelosi while riding a way of reform momentum.
In a letter announcing his bid in mid-November, Ryan said: “While having a position in Democratic leadership has never been my life’s ambition, after this election I believe we all need to reevaluate our roles within the caucus, the Democratic Party, and our country. That is why I am announcing my run for minority leader."

On her path to victory, Pelosi did step on a few toes. She angered members of the Congressional Black Caucus when she announced her litany of reforms for the Democratic Caucus and one of her proposals targeted the third-highest ranking position in the Caucus, a position held by Rep. Jim Clyburn. Pelosi's reforms would limit the amount of terms a representative could have under their belt while serving in the role, a change that would leave Clyburn in the cold.
Ryan attempted to capitalize on the late gaffe by issuing a statement saying he would not implement any changes to that position if he were elected to leadership. The ploy apparently did not hold enough sway for his colleagues.
Ultimately for Ryan this isn't a devastating loss. He has raised his national profile significantly by coming at the throne and suffered relatively few black eyes in the process. In fact, he may have shaped his narrative to fit the idea of Ryan as Reformer. Whether or not it sticks or if he fades back into anonymity is yet to be seen.
