New Hospital Ranking Snubs Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals
Healthgrades list of the 100 best hospitals in America left off two of Cleveland's largest employers.

CLEVELAND, OH — Six Ohio hospitals made Healthgrades ranking of the 100 best hospitals in America. In a shocking turn though, both the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals failed to crack the top 100. No Cleveland-area hospital is in the top 100.
A spokesperson for Healthgrades said both UH and the Clinic were among the top 250 hospitals in the US and were recipients of the group's Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence. However, neither hospital was able to crack the top 100.
"The recipients of the America’s 50 and 100 Best Hospitals Awards — which represent the top 1% and 2% of hospitals in the nation, respectively — demonstrate superior clinical outcomes across the majority of common inpatient conditions and procedures and sustained this performance for at least five consecutive years," the spokesperson said in an email.

The Cleveland Clinic did not respond to Patch's request for comment. But the hospital system has consistently ranked as one of the best in the nation, taking the number two spot on the U.S. News Hospital Honor Roll. Finding the Clinic unable to crack the top 100 of a list is shocking.
According to Healthgrades, the hospitals that receive its awards have superior clinical outcomes across the majority of common inpatient conditions and procedures. Healthgrades says that these hospitals sustained their performance for at least five consecutive years.

However, U.S. News has consistently ranked the Cleveland Clinic as one of the highest performing hospitals in terms of outcomes in a variety of categories, including ranking the hospital as the best for cardiology and heart surgery.
The analysis by Healthgrades found that its ranked hospitals outperformed their counterparts in treating a core group of conditions that account for more than 80 percent of deaths in the areas evaluated for the rankings.
The Ohio hospitals that did rank among the best 100 hospitals in America are:
Bethesda North Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio (Top 1 percent)
Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio (Top 1 percent)
Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton, Ohio (Top 2 percent)
Mercy Health-Fairfield Hospital, Fairfield, Ohio (Top 2 percent)
Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, Ohio (Top 2 percent)
ProMedica Toledo Hospital, Toledo, Ohio (Top 1 percent)
The procedures and conditions evaluated in the methodology include heart attack, pancreatitis, pneumonia, sepsis, stroke, bariatric surgery, defibrillator procedures and spinal fusion. (Read more about the methodology here.)
To be eligible for the rankings, a hospital must be evaluated in at least 21 of the procedures and conditions. Healthgrades uses Medicare inpatient data purchased from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
