Baker Mayfield To The Cleveland Browns: NFL Draft 2018

Let the speculation end. It's a quarterback at No. 1 and a surprise from Ohio State at No. 4.

CLEVELAND, OH — The No. 1 pick of the NFL draft is Baker Mayfield, quarterback from Oklahoma. The No. 4 pick is Northeast Ohio's own Denzel Ward, a cornerback from The Ohio State University.

Mayfield, the Heisman trophy winner, was one of the most productive players in college football history. Now he inherits a team that has gone 1-31 over the past two seasons.

The 23-year-old Sooner is a chip-on-the-shoulder player who famously planted the Oklahoma flag in the middle of Ohio State University's field (let's see how he gets along with Ward) after knocking off the Buckeyes. He's also had some off-the-field antics that made some teams skeptical of taking him high. He grabbed his groin area during a game against Kansas and was arrested when he argued with police last year.

Clearly, the Browns were not one of the teams scared by those antics.

The appeal of Mayfield? Let's look at the stats. He had a 70.5 completion percentage, 4,627 yards and 43 touchdowns versus six interceptions. Throughout his collegiate career Mayfield never threw more than 9 interceptions and never racked up fewer than 2,300 yards. From his sophomore year on, Mayfield had at least 35 touchdowns per season.

Ward is a 5 feet 11 defensive back who ran a 4.3 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. He grabbed two interceptions this past season and had 15 pass deflections. He was one of the top-rated corners in the draft.

The buzz around the Browns front office and what it was planning to do had been deafening. That's largely because no one had any idea what General Manager John Dorsey was planning. The first year GM famously decided to play his cards so close to the vest that no one, not even Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, knew what was happening until Draft Day.

Baker Mayfield May Not Want To Visit Columbus

Buckeye fans are not likely to forget this...
