CLEVELAND — In the expiring seconds of what should have been a triumphant victory for the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night, Myles Garrett peeled off the helmet of Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph and then hit him in the head, using the helmet as a weapon. The NFL has now suspended Garrett indefinitely for his actions.

On Thursday night, the Browns finally won a game against Pittsburgh, beating the squad 21-7 in Cleveland, but the mood in the locker room and around the city was notably melancholy after the fourth quarter. With seconds left in the game, Rudolph threw a screen pass before being hit by Garrett. The two went to the ground, Rudolph repeatedly touched Garrett's helmet on the ground, and then Garrett ripped off Rudolph's helmet. When a Steelers player tried to separate the two, and Rudolph grabbed for his own helmet, Garrett reached back and then hit Rudolph with the helmet.

Rudolph turned to complain to a referee and was then hit from behind by Browns defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi.

Garrett and Ogunjobi were both ejected for taking part in a late-game melee. Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey was also ejected for attacking Garrett, after the helmet-swing.

Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens said he had never seen anything like Garrett's actions on a football field. Quarterback Baker Mayfield said he could not explain what happened. It was a sentiment echoed by the roster in post-game interviews.
