Ohio BMV Trying New Program To Reduce Wait Times

A new program will allow BMV customers to register for a spot in line digitally and then show up in-person as they get close to the desk.

Everyone hates waiting in line at the BMV, but a new app may reduce wait times for customers.

On Monday morning, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles announced the testing of a virtual queuing system for people that visit deputy registrars for things like license renewal or vehicle registration. The system will allow customers to "get in line" online.

Essentially, BMV customers can check-in online and never have to wait in line. The customer can digitally move through a line toward the BMV workers and then arrive in-person at the office. Once at the office, the customer uses a self-service kiosk to check-in and then takes their spot in a physical line.

The hope is the new system will reduce physical wait times for BMV customers. The new system went live at 12 BMV registrars on Monday morning. If successful, the program could be rolled out to all BMV offices.

"Right now, drivers can be subjected to significant wait times, which is inconvenient, inefficient, and frustrating," said Governor Mike DeWine. "We believe the introduction of this new technology will save drivers' valuable time and give the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles and its deputy registrars better ability to provide exceptional customer service."
