Ohio Confirms 1,000 New Coronavirus Cases In 24 Hours

Officials confirmed more than 1,000 positive COVID-19 tests in the past 24 hours, the third largest single-day spike in positive tests yet.

COLUMBUS, OH — Ohio confirmed more than 1,000 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday afternoon. This is the third biggest single-day jump in COVID-19 cases in Ohio since the outbreak began.

Health officials confirmed 1,076 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours. Over the past three weeks, Ohio's per day average for new coronavirus cases was 630.

Hospitalizations related to COVID-19 are also on the upswing, according to the Ohio Department of Health. At least 72 people were admitted to hospitals due to COVID-19 on Wednesday.

While hospitalizations and new cases were both up Wednesday, deaths caused by COVID-19 were down. Over the past three weeks, the state has averaged 20 COVID-19-related deaths per day. On Wednesday, 13 people died due to the virus.

Gov. Mike DeWine has said surges in new cases come before deaths spike. He has spent the week urging Ohioans to wear masks and follow social distancing guidelines.

It is not yet clear how many COVID-19 tests were conducted between Tuesday and Wednesday. However, the Ohio Department of Health said 17,085 tests were processed on June 29 and 913 were positive for COVID-19.
