Ohio Delays 3 Upcoming Executions

COLUMBUS, OH — The scheduled execution of three Ohio prisoners has been delayed, Gov. Mike DeWine announced this week. State officials continue to struggle to acquire drugs used in Ohio's execution process.

Ohio currently uses a three-drug lethal injection protocol. However, many drug manufacturers banned use of their products in executions. Those same manufacturers have threatened to cut off all sales of their products to Ohio government agencies. That is, in part, because some of the drugs used in Ohio executions have also been found to possibly create pain in prisoners during the execution.

The three executions being delayed are:

  • Kareem Jackson, who was scheduled to be executed on Sept. 16, 2020. The new date of execution is Sept. 15, 2022.
  • Stanley Fitzpatrick, who was scheduled to be executed on Oct. 14, 2020. The new date of execution is Feb. 15, 2023.
  • David Sneed, who was scheduled to be executed on Dec. 9, 2020. The new date of execution is April 19, 2023.

Jackson was found guilty of murdering two people during a drug-motivated robbery in Clinton Township in 1997, according to the Columbus Dispatch. His planned execution has been delayed several times.

Fitzpatrick was convicted of killing three people in Lincoln Heights in 2001, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Sneed was convicted of murdering a man after robbing him and then dumping his body in a creek, the Canton Repository reported. Sneed's execution has been delayed multiple times.
