Ohio Has 156 US Presidential Scholars in 2017

The 2017 US Presidential Scholars have been announced. The state of Ohio got 156 students onto the list.

Students are selected for recognition based on a variety of categories and accomplishments. Namely, the selection committee looks for academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations, transcripts, community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to ideals.

The US Presidential Scholars program was formed in 1964 and has honored about 7,000 high school students throughout its existence, a press release from the program says. The program was expanded in 1979 to pay heed to student creating stunning work in the fields of visual, literary and performing arts. In 2015, the program was expanded again to recognize student accomplishments in career and technical education fields.

The full list of students being honored is below. Asterisks are used to designate different competitions the students may be competing in. For example, one asterisk nexts to name indicates a candidate for US Presidential Scholar in the Arts designation. Two asterisks means a student is a Candidate for US Presidential Scholar in Career and Technical Education. Three asterisks indicate a candiate for US Presidential Scholar and US Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Four asterisks means a student is a Candidate for US Presidential Scholar and US Presidential Scholar in Career and Technical Education.
