LAKEWOOD, OH — Students at Lakewood High School set dozens of miniature flags into the ground on Tuesday night, setting up a memorial for a tragedy many of them had only read about. On Wednesday, the students were part of a larger whole, a nation remembering the thousands of people killed on September 11, 2001.

Memorials will be visited across the nation on Wednesday as Americans remember the 2,983 people who were killed in attacks at the World Trade Centers site, the Pentagon and aboard Flight 93.

The 18-year anniversary of the attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C., and the crash of United Flight 93, prompted Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to order all flags at public buildings flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Wednesday.

DeWine also asked all Ohioans to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. on Wednesday. He said the moment would, "honor the innocent Americans and others from around the world who died as a result of the attacks."

First responders from around Ohio posted messages of remembrance to social media.
