Ohio Senators Blast President Trump's Comments On Congresswomen

The president told four congresswomen of color to leave the U.S.

Senator Sherrod Brown didn't mince words when responding to President Donald Trump's incendiary Tweets telling four Democratic congresswomen of color to leave the U.S.

In a blunt Tweet of his own on Monday, Brown said, "President Trump’s comments are racist and un-American." Brown's colleague from Ohio, Senator Rob Portman, a Republican, issued a statement calling the president's comments "divisive, unnecessary and wrong."

The Ohioans' strong rebuke followed Trump's comments telling four lawmakers to go back to the "broken and crime infested places from which they came." However, the four congresswomen he was likely referring to are all U.S. citizens and all but one of the women was born in America.

Trump was referring to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, from New York, and her colleagues Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan. Only Omar, from Somalia, is foreign-born, the Associated Press noted.

Brown and Portman weren't the only politicians that pushed back against Trump's rhetoric. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Trump is trying to "make America white again." While Michigan Rep. Justin Amash, a Republican, called the remarks "racist and disgusting."

Trump doubled down on his attacks this week, saying the four congresswomen were "pro-Al Qaeda" and "anti-American." He issued another Tweet on Tuesday morning, saying,
