One Man Found Dead After Cleveland House Fire

Eight other people were taken to the hospital for treatment, police said.

CLEVELAND — A 51-year-old man was killed during a house fire on Cleveland's west side, police announced on Saturday afternoon. Investigators are exploring the case as a possible homicide.

At about 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, the Cleveland police and fire departments were called to a home on W. 95th Street for a fire. When crews arrived, eight people were outside the house, watching the flames.

According to police, the eight people outside the home all lived in the upstairs unit of the duplex. Those eight people, including a 9-month-old baby, were taken to MetroHealth for smoke inhalation. All eight were checked and released, police said.

Members of the Cleveland fire department then found a 51-year-old man unconscious in the downstairs unit. He was taken to MetroHealth by EMS and was later pronounced dead. The cause of his death has not yet been determined, police said.

Members of the Cleveland homicide unit, fire arson and the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office are taking part in the ongoing investigation.
