CLEVELAND — The Port of Cleveland received $11 million in federal funding this week. The grants were awarded by the Department of Transportation, according to Rep. Marcy Kaptur, whose district stretches from Toledo to Cleveland.

The Port of Cleveland's Dock 26 was closed in December 2018, due to its poor condition, Kaptur said. A portion of its regular cargo load was transferred to Dock 24, which only has about a decade of usefulness left.

With the influx of funding, the port will modernize its decks and infrastructure, allowing it to increase its cargo volumes. The Port of Cleveland hopes to double its cargo volume over the next 20 years.

"With this money, we will rebuild both docks (bringing Dock 26 back online for use since we had to close it in December of 2018 due to structural issues, as the dock was nearly 70 years old) and improve cargo handling ability and rail access," a Port of Cleveland spokesperson told Patch.

The Port of Toledo also received $16 million from the Department of Transportation this week.

“I am thrilled that both the Port of Toledo and Port of Cleveland have been recognized by the Department of Transportation for national funding,” said Kaptur. “Today’s announcement is a major victory and step forward for Northern Ohio’s shipping infrastructure. Last year, I sent a letter urging DOT Secretary Elaine Chao to accept both grant applications. Thank you to the DOT for prioritizing these critical infrastructure projects by awarding more than $27,000,000 in federal funds.”
