CLEVELAND — Damaging thunderstorms swept through Northeast Ohio on Labor Day.

With rain pouring down, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Cuyahoga and Lorain counties on Monday. Minor flooding could occur at several creeks and rivers throughout the area.

"Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive cars through flooded areas," the agency said. "Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles."

The flash flood warning will expire at 8:30 p.m. on Monday night.

As of 1 p.m., nearly 1,000 Cuyahoga County residents were without power due to the storms. Only 44 Lorain County residents reported power outages in their neighborhoods.

The storms should calm by Monday evening, though there's a chance rain continues through early Tuesday. Current forecasts show calmer, dryer weather for Northeast Ohio on Tuesday, though temperatures will briefly spike into the upper 80s.
