Rambus Laying Off 50+ Employees In Cuyahoga County

The company's lighting division has been break-even, according to company records. Now, the company plans to layoff 52 workers.

BRECKSVILLE, OH — Rambus Inc. is laying off 52 employees in Brecksville, the company said in a letter to the Ohio Department of Jobs and Families Services on Tuesday. The company is closing its lighting division operations in the city and will begin laying off workers on Feb. 5, 2018.

Employees that are laid off will receive two months pay and health and welfare benefits through March 31. Layoffs will continue from Feb. 5 through March 30.

In its end-of-year financial outlook, Rambus said the lighting division had been roughly "break even" for the company. However, Rambus said its 2017 revenue was $393.1 million, 17 percent higher than in 2016.

"With changes relating to our largest light guide customer that resulted in a reduction in revenue from the division, we are no longer able to maintain our lighting division as a profitable business," a spokesperson told Patch in an email. "As a result, we’ve had to make some tough decisions and will be exiting the lighting market. Unfortunately, there are approximately 50 lighting employees in Brecksville, who are a part of this lighting organization and who will be affected by this closing.”

The company will now focus on data centers and something-called "the mobile edge."
