CLEVELAND — Sherwin-Williams has been a key part of the Cleveland business community since 1866. That could change by 2023. The company is now exploring possibly moving its headquarters and research and development buildings to another city or state.

Sherwin-Williams has multiple facilities throughout Northeast Ohio and employs about 4,400 people in the region. Currently, the paint producer is headquartered at 101 W. Prospect Avenue in Cleveland, the company's home since 1930.

The paint maker has been reviewing its portfolio of properties and is considering moving its headquarters and R&D facilities to another state. As part of its review process, Sherwin-Williams will consider multiple locations in Cleveland, Northeast Ohio and around the nation, the company said.

If a transition were to occur, it would not happen until at least 2023, the company said. Any such move would require Board approval.

"The company's significant growth and global expansion over the last several decades has resulted in a less than optimal configuration of headquarters, offices and R&D facilities across multiple locations," said Sherwin-Williams Chairman and CEO John Morikis.

He described the company's current headquarters campus as limiting.

"Given the limitations of our current footprint and driven by the needs of our customers, we are exploring options that will help us to accelerate productivity and efficiency, enhance technology and innovation, enable greater collaboration, support recruitment and retention and reduce maintenance costs over the long term," he said.

Sherwin-Williams promised to update both employees and stakeholders about its headquarters review process as it moves forward.
