Here are the top 3 stories in Cleveland today:

  1. The monitor overseeing reform in the Cleveland Police Department is calling out Cleveland's hiring of three candidates from outside departments. The hiring of the three officers "illustrates a disregard" for background checks, argues the monitor, Hassan Aden. A report with the U.S. District Court in Cleveland says investigators found information that should have prevented the candidates from being hired. (cleveland.com)
  2. The United States Justice Department declined to reopen the investigation of Tamir Rice's death. Cleveland Police killed Rice in Nov. 2014 and recent information the family has produced in recent months has not changed the Justice Department's decision to close the case. The City of Cleveland settled with the Tamir family in 2016 for $6 million. (cleveland.com)
  3. A Cleveland man crashed a vehicle into a snowbank after being shot. An unidentified 40-year-old man was found dead in his vehicle on East 104th Street in a snowbank. The Cleveland Police Department is currently investigating the incident and is asking the community to come forward with any information they might have. (Cleveland Patch)

Last week, we told you about our new favorite non-alcoholic go-to — the refreshingly bitter drinks from our partners at Betera. They're chef-created from natural botanicals, lightly effervescent and worthy of life beyond "Dry January." We mentioned that their Ginger-Orange was excellent; we've since tried Elderflower-Lime and loved it as well — light and floral with the perfect amount of zing. We're converts.

Enough of you took Betera up on their 15% discount on first orders for Patch Daily readers that they've extended the offer for another week. Use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — try Betera here.
