DAYTON, OH — The new U.S. Space Command headquarters could come to Ohio.

Gov. Mike DeWine is urging the Air Force to bring the headquarters to the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The project could bring 1,400 personnel to Ohio.

"Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the Dayton region would be excellent hosts for the U.S. Space Command's new headquarters," said DeWine. "This area is already home to the National Air and Space Intelligence Center, Air Force Research Laboratory, Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, and Air Force Material Command. It's a powerful combination and a synergy that you can't find anywhere else."

DeWine sent a letter to the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force this week, touting the strength of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The base was nominated for Space Force headquarters by Beavercreek Mayor Bob Stone.

DeWine's letter was signed by 22 area mayors and four county commission presidents. The letter urges the Air Force to make Dayton the permanent U.S. Space Command headquarters.

In May, the Air Force and the Secretary of Defense's office, announced they would look for Space Command's headquarters. Nominations for the operation opened in May and the assessment process continues.

"As the newest combatant command, SPACECOM will defend America’s vital interests in space —

the next warfighting domain. And I think that’s pretty obvious to everybody. It’s all about space," said President Donald Trump in August 2019, when he established Space Command.

U.S. Space Command is led by General John W. "Jay" Raymond.
