Violence In Cleveland: 20 Shot, 3 Killed During Holiday Weekend

CLEVELAND — The Independence Day weekend in Cleveland was violent and deadly. At least 20 people were shot and three people were killed during the weekend, police confirmed Sunday.

"Gun violence and violent crime is on the rise. This holiday weekend specifically, the city of Cleveland has seen a large number of incidents involving shootings and tragically, three people killed. There is no excuse for this violent activity and police are actively pursuing the perpetrators. We remind citizens to do their part," Mayor Frank Jackson said in a statement on Sunday.

On W. 152nd Street, a July 4th party ended with two people being shot in the chest, police said. One of the victims has been declared dead and the other is in serious condition at MetroHealth Medical Center.

On the east side, an 8-year-old girl was shot while in the backseat of a car. The child is in stable condition, but police have been unable to identify who shot at the girl.

A 47-year-old was found dead on Nelson Avenue on Saturday night, police said. He had been shot in the neck. Officers found his body on the sidewalk.

A third deadly shooting happened at 3 a.m. on July 5, though details on that incident were sparse on Sunday afternoon.

"Anyone with crime tips is asked to call police. Anonymous information can be provided via crimestoppers by calling 216-25-CRIME," Jackson said.

Police are still investigating many of the holiday weekend's shooting, according to a department spokesperson.
