Violence At July 4th Party: Cleveland Man Sentenced

After pleading guilty to attempted murder, Sean Corrigan was sentenced to 28 years in prison.

CLEVELAND — Sean Corrigan was sentenced to 28 years in prison for a violent outburst that caused the death of one person and injured two others.

Corrigan, 24, previously pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, attempted murder and felonious assault. He was sentenced Thursday to 28 years in prison.

“This is sadly another tragic example of the senseless gun violence that is plaguing our community,” said Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley.

On July 4, 2020, Corrigan and several others were at a backyard party on W. 152nd Street in Cleveland. Corrigan was intoxicated and got into an argument with other partygoers, prosecutors said.

A 56-year-old man asked Corrigan to calm down, but Corrigan pulled out a gun and shot him multiple times, prosecutors said.

Corrigan then shot a 59-year-old man in the back and pistol-whipped a 57-year-old woman, prosecutors added.

Cleveland police arrested Corrigan at the party and collected his gun and other evidence. EMS took all three of the victims to the hospital, where the 56-year-old was later declared dead. The other two victims were treated and later released, prosecutors said.

Corrigan was connected to the violence through DNA evidence, forensic bullets and multiple eyewitness accounts. DNA evidence from the recovered gun matched Corrigan, shell casings and bullets found in the backyard matched Corrigan's gun and eyewitnesses said he was the shooter.

Corrigan then pleaded guilty to the charges against him.
