World Series Ticket Prices: Cleveland Indians vs Chicago Cubs

Tickets have become more expensive over the last five years and the median ticket for the 2016 series is more than $2,000.

CLEVELAND, OH - The median ticket price for Game 1 of the 2016 World Series is $2,395, according to ticket seller Vivid Seats. That's a big jump from last year when the average ticket for the Kansas City Royals-New York Mets series cost $756.

One of the reasons for the jump in cost is the teams playing in the series. The Cubs are making their first trip to the Fall Classic since 1945. They come with the burden of the longest championship drought in American professional sports, last winning the World Series in 1908.

Their opponent, the Cleveland Indians, have the second longest World Series drought in baseball. The team last won the championship in 1948. Since then, the Tribe has been one part of the city's notorious sports history of incompetence, indescribable bad luck, and complete buffoonery. While the city's curse has recently been buried, the Tribe's drought remains as painful as ever.

With one team guaranteed to end its cursed drought, there's a higher-than-usual demand for tickets. That means higher-than-usual prices. Here's what Vivid Seats is predicting for the Cleveland home games, in terms of ticket prices:

That's a massive jump from previous years. The average ticket price for last year's series was $756, but there wasn't nearly the amount of national interest in the two teams battling for the championship. In fact, this may be the most compelling series of the last five years.

MLB Postseason Ticket Trends by Round

The per game ticket price average has also increased significantly for this series. The most expensive game of the last few years was Game 3 of last year's World Series, when the Royals brought the action into New York for a game against the Mets. The average ticket price for that game crossed the $1,000 threshold. The only other game to do that in the past five years was Game 6 of the Boston Red Sox versus St. Louis Cardinals series.

World Series Ticket Trends From Vivid Seats

The kicker for Tribe fans is that while tickets in Cleveland are expensive, tickets for Wrigley Field promise to be backbreaking for most wallets. Vivid Seats predicted that the Cubbies would have the most expensive World Series tickets at the beginning of the playoffs.
