📰 News we're reading

1. Home affordability crisis continues as city announces $199k condos coming to the east side (abc6onyourside.com) — Columbus is investing $4.1 million to build 23 "permanently affordable" condos at East Broad Street and South Gould Road, aimed at moderate-income buyers. The Broad and Gould Condominiums will use a community land trust model, with prices around $199,000 and move-ins expected in fall 2027, as leaders confront the city's broader housing affordability challenges.

2. 3 new affordable assisted living communities under construction in Ohio (myfox28columbus.com) — New affordable assisted living communities are coming to Grove City, northeast Columbus and Fairborn, promising 120-unit buildings with studios and one‑bedrooms tailored to seniors needing daily support. Opening as soon as late 2027, they'll feature on‑site care, meals, transportation, and amenities like fitness rooms and salons, expanding options for central Ohio families planning long‑term care.

3. Franklinton one step closer to noise wall (nbc4i.com) — Franklinton neighbors living along I-70 are closer to getting a long-sought noise wall that could make backyards and porches usable again. Residents are gathering signatures while ODOT finalizes designs and seeks funding, after tree removal in 2024 worsened highway noise. Construction plans could be ready by next summer, with funding targeted for 2031.

4. Hidden Histories: Roller coasters, a zoo and beach made Olentangy Park a Midwest draw (myfox28columbus.com) — Longtime residents may remember when Clintonville's Olentangy Park was a major Midwest amusement destination, with roller coasters, a zoo, and a riverside beach. The park closed in the 1930s, but its beautifully restored carousel still spins at the Columbus Zoo, offering a rare surviving link to a once-bustling piece of Columbus entertainment history.

5. Franklin County sheriff carries out sex offender registry checks (nbc4i.com) — Franklin County deputies based in Columbus recently checked nearly 1,200 registered sex offender addresses, confirming compliance at 894 locations during a focused "Operation Verify" week. Investigators are now following up on unverified addresses and public tips, and more than 120 warrants have already been filed this year for offenders not properly registering or living where they report.
