1. How clean is your street? Columbus releases litter index (nbc4i.com) — Columbus has just updated its citywide Litter Index, scoring nearly every street from "little to no litter" to "extremely littered" so crews know where to focus cleanups. Keep Columbus Beautiful says this August survey guides illegal dumping crackdowns and volunteer efforts, and overall litter has been trending down across the city.
2. Dispute over towed car at Columbus intersection leads to arrest, police say (abc6onyourside.com) — Police say a dispute over a towed car at Trabue Road and North Wilson Road in west Columbus escalated Monday when the car's owner allegedly stole the tow truck and fled. Officers report the chase ended at the Chase Bank on Sawmill Road, where the suspect was arrested and the tow company chose to press charges.
3. 2027 insurance plan approved unanimously for Columbus City Schools teachers (abc6onyourside.com) — Health insurance for Columbus City Schools employees is now set for 2027, with a new plan capping premium increases at 8% and avoiding steep surcharges teachers feared. The unanimously approved proposal, backed by the Columbus Education Association, follows vocal concerns about sharply rising costs and takes effect ahead of open enrollment starting October 5.
4. Trump can't force election changes by blocking counterterrorism funds to states, judge says (mercurynews.com) — Columbus has joined other cities and counties in successfully challenging a Trump administration attempt to tie federal counterterrorism grants to new election rules. A federal judge ruled FEMA overstepped its authority, protecting Columbus's access to antiterrorism funding without having to change how local elections are run, including voter verification, ballot methods, and audit procedures.
5. After court ruling, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine to hold Kalshi accountable for operating illegally (wcpo.com) — Ohio's governor is vowing to crack down on prediction market platform Kalshi after a federal appeals court said the company must follow state sports betting laws, a move that affects betting on teams like the Columbus Crew. For Columbus residents, the decision could change how online wagering is regulated, including potential fines, licensing requirements, and age limits for anyone placing sports-related bets.
