Union members packed a board meeting, saying they've lost confidence in leadership and want more protection from unexpected costs, while the district cites a $24 million benefits overrun and a $50 million budget gap.
2. Ratmir Timashev's OH.io Ventures taps tech veteran as its leader (dispatch.com) — A Columbus-based venture platform, OH.io Ventures, has tapped tech veteran Kevin Pohmer to lead its push to turn Columbus into a major tech hub. Backed by $100 million from founder Ratmir Timashev, the firm partners with software startups as a Columbus-based sales and marketing arm, aiming to triple revenues and attract international companies to open local offices.
3. Oprah-Backed Restaurant Chain Files For Bankruptcy, Abruptly Closes 12 Locations (dailyvoice.com) — A True Food Kitchen restaurant in Columbus has permanently closed as part of the Oprah-backed chain's Chapter 11 bankruptcy, leaving local employees abruptly out of work after Oct. 4 service. Staff were told not to report for shifts but will be paid for hours already worked, keep benefits through Oct. 31, and may seek transfers to other locations.
4. Ohio's first lady joins volunteers to help food banks (nbc4i.com) — Hundreds of volunteers joined Ohio First Lady Fran DeWine in Columbus to pack thousands of meal bags for food banks, spotlighting food insecurity in the Columbus area. The effort, supported by local partners like Kroger, Nationwide, and Ohio State, will send food to about 10 locations across central and south-central Ohio, including families facing hunger close to home.
