Walmart and Sam’s Club Volunteers Celebrate Earth Day with Hands-On Learning at LifeTown Columbus

In celebration of Earth Day, volunteers from Walmart stores and Sam’s Clubs across Central Ohio gathered at LifeTown Columbus for a meaningful day of service, education, and community connection. The event brought associates and students together for an interactive planting experience focused on sustainability and essential life skills.

The event, titled “Ready, Set, Grow” highlighted the power of community partnerships and the lasting impact of hands-on learning experiences, as volunteers worked side-by-side with students to guide them through the process of planting, nurturing, and caring for herbs that can be grown indoors. The hands-on activity not only introduced environmental concepts but also reinforced responsibility, patience, and confidence in a supportive, engaging environment. Each student left with their own herb plant to continue growing at home, extending the learning experience beyond the classroom.

The initiative was made possible through a collaboration with Bonnie Plants and the dedicated efforts of Walmart and Sam’s Club associates, whose commitment to community service was on full display throughout the morning.

LifeTown Columbus, an immersive educational center, is known for empowering students of all abilities through real-world simulations and experiential learning. Its programs focus on building independence and practical skills while supporting social, emotional, and vocational development in an inclusive setting.

“This Earth Day, Walmart planted more than seeds—they planted hope and confidence into the hearts of our students,” said Rabbi Areyah Kaltmann, Executive Director of LifeTown Columbus. “Each child left our program knowing that they can make the world much more beautiful by nurturing their environment. That’s celebrating Earth Day every single day for our kids who need it the most.”

Walmart’s partnership with LifeTown extends well beyond Earth Day. Throughout the year, Walmart supports students through initiatives like the Kitchen of Life, helping provide hands-on learning experiences that build independence and life readiness. During the holiday season, Walmart ensured every student received gifts for themselves and their loved ones—demonstrating a continued commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of the children LifeTown serves.
