'Death Cafe' to Stir Understanding of Mortality in Cuyahoga Falls

In a nutshell, Death Cafes provide a place to explore death's aspects from the biological realities to spiritual realms. Read on:

"Death Cafe."

Sounds morbid, right? Well, not exactly, according toΒ co-organizer Bob Pontius, of the Death Cafe, Akron Chapter.Β

First off, theΒ Death Cafe is not intended toΒ lead participants toward any particularΒ conclusion, religion, product or course of action, wrote Pontius in a recent Patch event post.Β

Rather, the concept isΒ to provide people of all ages withΒ a place to explore, explain and examine death's aspectsΒ from the biological realities to spiritual realms.

Pontius explains the endΒ mission isΒ to respectfullyΒ break through the taboo topicΒ andΒ increase awareness of death with a view toΒ helping people make the most of their finite lives.

The movement is relatively new in the United States, but has been popular for years in Europe,Β according to fox8.com.

Here's what else they are:

  • They function on a not-for-profitΒ basis,Β though to be sustainable, chapters try to cover expenses through donations and fundraising.
  • Death Cafes are open to the public and are meant to be confidential.Β

Here's what they're not:

  • They're not designed to be a bereavement or grief support group.
  • They do notΒ serve as a replacement for professional counseling programs.
  • While theΒ subject matter and topics may be therapeutic for some, this effect is not theΒ primary intention. This is partly in an effort to sustain Death Cafes as comfortable, relaxed and openly exploratory spaces, as well as to respect continuity of existing bereavement resources.
"Death and dying occurs to one out of every one of us," said Root Cafe general manager Karolyn Dunlop. Β "In American culture (death) tends to be a very taboo subject. . .so perhaps it's time to explore it more closely and in pubic."

The next Death Cafe will be held at The Root CafeΒ β€”Β located at 852 W. Bath Rd.Β β€”Β on July 25 at 6 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.Β
