Historic Glendale Cemetery topic of March 13 Cuy. Falls Historical Society meeting
The Weds., March 13 meeting of the Cuyahoga Falls Historical Society will feature a presentation on the history, art and symbolism of Akron’s historic Glendale Cemetery, founded in 1839. The meeting, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. in the Sutliff meeting room at the Cuyahoga Falls Library, 2015 Third St.
Speakers for the event will be Michele Colopy, author of Living History, Dying Art: The History of Glendale Cemetery, and Bill Wilkerson, former City of Akron Engineer/project manager, during a disaster that struck the cemetery in 1977.

According to Colopy, “Cemeteries are central to a community as early parks, safe places for the departed, and when “disaster” strikes, the community connection becomes all-important. Historic and beautiful Glendale Cemetery tells the story of a community. The memorial art symbolizes, love, joy, sadness and sacrifice.”
Glendale Cemetery is noted for its rolling hills, stunning monuments and impressive mausoleums – many of which are modeled after early Greek and Roman temples or Gothic churches. The cemetery also features several structures that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places – including a Civil War Memorial Chapel that is considered one of the most outstanding examples in the nation.
