Simple Do-It-Yourself Crafts for Valentine's Day
An easy at home craft that will help spread the love!
Sally Heston, an art instructor at the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center (CVAC) and a faculty member of the Virginia Marti College of Art and Design in Lakewood, agreed to help me construct a few easy Valentine's Day cards and crafts. As a professional artist, and previously a kindergarten art teacher, Heston was perfectly qualified to show this art-challenged journalist how to put the following little projects together.

Step 1: First, Heston and I cut our empty paper towel tube in half.

Step 2: We used a glue stick to wrap the paper towel tube in pink tissue paper, creating the body of our Love Bug.
Step 3: Heston (expertly) used scissors to cut two large hearts out of construction paper.
Step 4: Using the glue stick, I glued the hearts onto the back of the tube to act as wings.
Step 5: Heston and I each grabbed a pipe cleaner, twisted them in swirly shapes, and glued them to the inside top of the tube for Love Bug antennae.
Step 6: I used a purple marker to draw a face on the front of the tube, and wrote a cute Valentine's Day message on one of the wings.Β
Heart-Shaped Envelope
What you'll need: Construction paper, scissors, stickers, glue stick (optional)
Step 1: Heston cut a large heart out of construction paper, and folded in the two sides to meet in the middle.
Step 2: We folded the top of the heart down, just above the middle.
Step 3: Next, we folded the bottom of the heart up.
Step 4: I turned the heart-shaped envelope so that the flap was at the top, and Heston sealed our new envelope with a sticker.
Although it's clear Heston excels at simple holiday crafts, she works primarily with watercolor and drawing media. She uses a variety of subject matter as inspiration, such as still life, animals, flowers, and architecture. Heston's portfolio is comprised of many commissioned illustration and graphic design work in addition to simply painting for pleasure.
Furthermore, Heston serves as president of the and offers watercolor classes every Tuesday and Friday. For more information, call the CVAC at (330) 928-8092.
