What You Need to Know About the March 6 Primary

Ohio voters will decide much more than the Republican Presidential primary on March 6.

It's a major election that will narrow fields of candidates in a number of state, regional, judicial and county races, as well as decide local issues in some communities.

Here's what you need to know:

Deadlines for Voters

• You can register to vote until Feb. 6, which is 30 days before the election.

• If you want to vote by mail, the county Board of Elections has to have absentee ballots ready by Jan. 31. You have until noon on March 3 to apply for an absentee ballot from your county Board of Elections. 

• That ballot must be postmarked by March 5 and received by the Board of Elections by March 16 to be counted. 

• In-person voting by absentee ballot at your Board of Elections ends at 6 p.m. March 2.

What's On the Ballot

• In addition to the Presidential primary, Ohio voters will decide races for U.S. Senate, Congress, state senator, state representative, Ohio Supreme Court, appeals court, the Ohio Board of Education, political party central committees, common pleas judges and some county offices.

• In Summit County, there are a lot of county seats up for grabs:

• Council At-Large and Districts 1-8
• Engineer
• Fiscal Officer
• Sheriff
• Clerk of Courts
• Prosecutor
• Executive

• In Summit County, voters will vote on Issue #8 renewing a 4.75-mill operating levy for the Cuyahoga Falls School District. Woodridge Schools have Issue #10, an emergency levy seeking 6.83 mills, on the ballot. (Note: the link's information was an estimate. Woodridge Treasurer Deanna Levenger confirmed 6.83 mills, which was certified by the Summit County Fiscal Office.)

Voting Day

• Polls are open 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

• Absentee ballots that are not mailed must be delivered to the Board of Elections by 7:30 p.m.
