1. Doctor visits, excused absences now count toward Ohio chronic absenteeism rates (daytondailynews.com) — Dayton families should know that starting this school year, every minute students miss class—including for doctor visits and other excused reasons—now counts toward Ohio's chronic absenteeism threshold. Local districts such as Dayton, Springfield, Kettering, Centerville, and Beavercreek are already seeing high absenteeism, and schools plan to contact parents earlier and more often when attendance starts slipping.
2. Dayton schools teach kids lifesaving heart skills (wdtn.com) — Dayton schools are rolling out American Heart Association programs to teach students and families CPR, stroke recognition, and other lifesaving heart skills right in local classrooms. Alongside emergency training, kids will learn healthy habits around vaping, exercise, nutrition, sleep, and kindness, aiming to build a heart-smart culture across Dayton's school community.
3. Dayton Boys and Girls Club marks new building milestone with beam-signing event (dayton247now.com) — Dayton's Boys and Girls Club just celebrated a major milestone by having kids and neighbors sign the final beam of its new $18 million building, which will greatly expand nightly capacity and programs. Once finished, the site will host about 250 children each evening with leadership, workforce readiness, and recreation spaces, and the club is still raising the last portion of project funding.
4. Indiana man arrested after alleged burglaries and scuffle with deputies (wdtn.com) — An Indiana man is facing multiple felony charges after deputies say he forced his way into two homes in the Dayton-area Champaign County community of Johnson Township and then struggled with responding officers. Authorities report he was subdued with a Taser after allegedly trying to grab a deputy's rifle, and investigators also linked him to a stolen truck from Indiana.
