Ohio Connections Academy Recognizes Two Dayton Area Students
Star Student Award Recognizes Students for Achievement In and Out of the Virtual Classroom
Leilani Ward and Aaron Toland of Dayton were recently recognized among Ohio Connections Academy’s (OCA) Star Students for the month of October in recognition of their achievements and leadership in the classroom.
Each month the statewide online public charter school recognizes two students in each of the four grade bands. As the Star Students of the Month each will be presented a certificate and they will be profiled on the school’s newsletter and web site.
“The faculty, staff and members of the board at Ohio Connections Academy are proud to recognize these students and the commitment they demonstrate to our school and their community,” said Marie Hanna, OCA Superintendent said. “Each of our Star Students are leaders in the classroom and demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to learning – they truly deserve this recognition.”

Leilani, a 1st grader, was nominated by her teacher, Mrs. Welty, for her love of learning and the hard work she puts into her lessons every day. The Wards enrolled Leilani in Ohio Connections Academy last year as she entered Kindergarten because they liked the ability for their daughter to learn at her own pace and the “encouragement and close contact provided by the teachers.” They also appreciate how the school organizes activities for families and students to connect locally.
Aaron, a freshman at the statewide online public charter school, was nominated by three of his teachers, each of whom described him as the type of student who makes their jobs a little easier. “We tend to overlook the students who are already responsible and doing their job without constant reminders from the teachers,” said 9th grade teacher Heather Buckley. “Aaron is that rare student who does his lessons every day, attends LiveLessons regularly and maintains great grades. He even goes the extra miles and contacts his teachers when he experiences difficulties in his classes.”

Aaron enrolled in Ohio Connections Academy in 2014 in search of a more individualized approach to his education. Since switching from a traditional classroom setting, Aaron believes he has become a more confident student. “I like how flexible it is because I'm able to work ahead if I want or adjust my class schedule for the day if I have an appointment or other things going on.” Aaron said. “I feel like I'm more engaged in my classes.”
