University of Akron Student Helps Coordinate 7th Annual Hope Walk
Student Audrey Arend brings fresh ideas to Stewart's Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center.
Audrey Arend, a University of Akron student, joined Stewart’s Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center to assist in planning and coordinating its 7th Annual Hope Walk. As the events intern, Arend is getting a first-hand look at what it means to work in a fast-paced, non-profit that receives a portion of its funding through its fundraisers.
“Audrey brings innovative ideas and enthusiasm to her position and is helping us expand the awareness of the Hope Walk. We’re so grateful to have her on board,” said Events Coordinator Raven DeVoll.
The Hope Walk is one of two major fundraising events that SCP organizes annually. Both the Hope Walk and the Butterfly Gala help ensure Stewart’s support services remain free-of-charge to those in the community who have been affected by cancer.

Arend joined the SCP team in January for a semester-long internship. She is in her third year at the University of Akron and is pursuing a bachelor of arts degree in public relations and organizational communication with minors in psychology and American sign language. Arend is expected to graduate with honors in the spring of 2014.
In addition to preparing for the Hope Walk, Arend also assists in developing SCP’s social media network and relationships with donors.

“I cannot say how satisfying it is to work for an organization that dedicates itself so completely to helping people through difficult times in their lives,” said Arend. “The fact that I get to play a small role in that, makes me truly happy. I also love the fact that everyone I work with is so kind and warm-hearted. Working with such compassionate people drives me to be better.”
Meet Arend and other SCP volunteers at the 7th Annual Hope Walk on Saturday, May 11 at Bicentennial Park in Fairlawn. Registration begins at 8am, the walk starts at 9am. Pre-register online for $15 or on walk-day for $20. All donations help keep Stewart’s programs and services free-of-charge to those in need.
