Digital Rights management

Will all information that can be 3d printed be safe? This question was posed to me at a recent mini-tech conference I attended. The other option is that digital piracy compromise the creativity and innovation that could easily transfer within the industry. I know this in not the movie or music industry but it is still data. So will the Digital Rights Act have to be amended for physical objects. In theoretical endeavors many ideas can be more easily understood with tangible objects. So where do we draw a line between theoretical prototype and mass production. Which need to be better protected? The 3d printed gun that made its rounds in the media brought up many of the questions. Who will answer them?
