Truth in advertising reigns at Luigi's Restaurant. You know exactly what you’re getting at this Akron staple by name alone—inspired pizza and other Italian favorites done family-style. Gastronomic authorities in the know love the quaint and cozy haunt for the former, which has enjoyed many awards and accolades in over 60 years of business. Apparently even Funky Winkerbean creator Tom Batuik loves the place so much, he created Montoni’s restaurant in his famed comic strip in its image.
It stands to reason: the pocket-sized but potent menu is bursting with flavor—from scratch-crafted Italian soups (Wedding, Fagiole, Minestrone), to salads with an avalanche of cheese, entrees (Ravioli Florentine) and pizzas of all varieties. And no matter how you like your pie—we had a white pizza with tuna fish, fresh tomatoes, basil and anchovies there not long ago, don’t flinch!—Luigi’s can accommodate. It’s not highbrow, so don’t worry if pepperoni-and-mushroom is more your speed. You can get it there. They even have a bar, if you’re feeling like lingering a bit before or after your meal.
Plenty of insider tips at Luigi’s: 1) They’re cash only, so be sure to hit the ATM on the way. 2) They’re open every night until 2AM and on weekends until 4AM, so when that craving hits, they’re ready for you. 3) If you can, steer clear of “primetime hours,” because Luigi’s gets mobbed as the week progresses. 4) The biggest tip? The lasagna. It is dense and hearty with a thick-and-creamy consistency the likes of which usually comes from Italian grandmothers who have slaved in the kitchen all afternoon.
